Google, Tried and True.

I think the main reason is why we are all so drawn to Google is because it has repeatedly proven itself as a information center and business power house, supplying us with what we ask and what Google thinks we want. Saying that we are addicted is putting it to much in a negative light. Google is just doing a good job, so we keep coming back. Now saying it has to much power over our lives is an interesting idea. With everything they do such as ads, navigation, searching for information, mobile devices, and now even starting Google Fiber; a much faster internet service then anything else on the market, it would definitely seem like it, but they have this "power" because we give it to them. As I said before, Google has repeated proved itself as a quality company, thus their name is almost a symbol of quality. They are providing many services that we do indeed buy, but once again, that is because we enjoy what they do. I am even eager to have Google Fiber come to Chicago. Being capped by Comcast is all but enjoyable and fun. Even though some things have just not caught on, like Google+ and various other things they do, they put out a lot of services to us.

Now, which how much power we give them, I suppose they could completely disclose our privacy' however, it would not be a good business practice at all. It might even mean the death of the company because if there was a mass deviation from Google, because they ruin would their reputation, it would mean loses from ad revenue, mobile device revenue, and many other places. I'm sure they would not want to lose what they have.

Heartbleed

After seeing a lot mentioned about the Heartbleed issue, I decided to find some more information about it because it is effecting many big websites and your information could potentially be compromised. So, how Heartbleed works is it takes advantage of an SSL flaw. SSL is the protocol that encrypts https, which is your secure connection to the internet. This occurs by having a serverhello and a clienthello. After this, they confirm session ids and the server will send a sipherspec record. This is when the data is transferred. After that the server and client send each other finished messages and the session is disconnected. Heartbleed allows people to make memory dumps from OpenSSL. This allows them to read everything that was supposed to be encrypted. Essentially, it is a memory leak in the worst place ever. It leaks the primary key for the encryption that takes place, so everything can be decrypted instantly. The good news is that there has been a patch already to fix this. So, all we need to do is to change our passwords. This link will lead you to mashable's list of passwords you need to change because not everything was effected by Heartbleed. Also, a little extra information about Heartbleed, the reason for the name is because it takes place during the heartbeat process of SSL. Be careful out there on the web and change your passwords!

A blogpost on bloggers, blogging.

I chose to read about Bruce Schneier, and what I gathered from his post was essentially that he blogs for fun and for current information purposes. He used to do a monthly newsletter based on information he was finding. He would compile it into his letter and send it off that way. One of the issues with that is that his information would already be known and essentially old news. To publish old news will not keep viewers viewing. He transitioned to a blog to keep his information fresh and current and compiles his blog posts into monthly news letters in which he still sends out.

The information he blogs about is essentially security, thus having the name Schneier on Security. He makes no money off of his blog and claims he will try to keep it that way as long as possible, be cause he has a job and a salary. His message to new bloggers is to just do it and to not worry about being boring. This is a useful message because all you are really doing is talking about things that interest you, so if it is fun to you, then it doesn't matter what other people think.
